Green building standards define the market perception of green building and are positively transforming our built environment.
Restorative and Regenerative
The goals of the green building movement have been to reduce fossil fuel consumption through energy efficiency while also conserving water, improving occupant health, and reducing environmental impacts. These goals have rightly evolved from a place of ‘do less bad’ to creating buildings that are restorative and regenerative. Standards like the Living Building ChallengeTM are proving that buildings can produce more renewable-energy and clean-water than they consume, improve air-quality and sequester carbon. To market and improve green building results, third party not-for-profits such as the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) exist to create, audit, and certify green building standards.
Third Party Certifications Improve Equity
As a green design and construction firm, we see tremendous value for our clients in having projects not only called ‘green’, but publicly third-party certified as being built to a higher standard. Certifications allow market verification of results and allow building owners to market their project in association with the brand recognition of the standard they choose. In fact, a 2012 study performed by UC Berkeley and UCLA revealed that green certified homes in California are selling for an average 9% more than their non-certified market equivalents.
