Register-Guard Features Cowhorn Tasting Room2.23.18
Joel Gorthy, food and drink writer for the Register-Guard, shares some of the sustainable design features of Cowhorn Vineyard & Garden's tasting room that make it a leader in the wine industry. The world's first Living Building Challenge-certified tasting room, the building is free of "Red-Listed” materials and bioaccumulative chemicals such as asbestos, lead, mercury, PVC and bisphenol A (BPA).
The tasting room has pigment-free plaster on the walls; Oregon white oak floors treated only with non-VOC oil; and a charred wood surface on the front of the tasting bar, which acts as a natural chemical-free finish. Green Hammer worked with Sustainable Northwest Wood to ensure that only Forest Stewardship Council®– certified wood was used in building construction. In 2017, the Forest Stewardship Council, the world’s leading forest certification system, awarded Cowhorn and Green Hammer a Leadership Award. The award shines a light on people, companies and buildings breaking new ground and promoting responsible forest management.
