A Healthy Workplace Leads to Healthy Buildings5.4.18
Green Hammer considers itself an exceptional company with exceptional employees. We believe that when our team members are appropriately valued, cared for and supported, their creativity flourishes and their happiness shows in the quality of their work.
This is why we are committed to creating a healthy workplace, and one reason why we became a Certified B Corp. To become a Certified B Corp, we were required to meet performance standards in four categories: Governance, Workers, Community and Environment. Like other Certified B Corps, we answered more than 250 questions about our business practices, including employee salaries and benefits, civic engagement and giving, energy and water usage, purchasing policies, transportation practices, and more. Our answers were then verified by B Lab®, the nonprofit that certifies and supports B Corporations.
Locally, Green Hammer participates in the annual Oregon 100 Best Companies to Work For survey as another way to measure workplace satisfaction. The resulting comprehensive reports, compiled by Checkpoint Surveys and Oregon Business magazine, measure ongoing employee satisfaction in a number of areas, including:
- Work Environment
- Management & Communications
- Decision-Making & Trust
- Career Development & Learning
- Benefits & Compensation
- Sustainable Practices
In 2017, we were thrilled that Green Hammer employees rated us in at least the 80th percentile for every one of these categories. And when compared to the Top 33 small businesses in Oregon, we meet and frequently exceed their scores.
Though we think we’re doing a pretty great job at fostering a healthy workplace, this kind of third-party audit is an important way to measure the success of our practices, and to receive honest, anonymous employee feedback that shows us where we can still improve.
One way that we support our employees, foster open dialogue and ongoing education, and promote health and well-being is through our monthly ACTIVE (All Company Team Integration and Values Evaluation) meetings. Each quarter we have three ACTIVE meetings, the first is to review company financial health, the second is focused on improving teamwork and values training and the third is simply just to have fun together. We know our company is only as successful as the people who work for it, and these monthly meetings are one of the best investments we can make in our employees. Green Hammer will continue to look to our employees to help guide us toward leadership and excellence in the design-build industry.
